Love your pet? Then screen your vet.

Those of us who have pets realize how important it is to know a great veterinarian who is skilled in everything from administering vaccines to treating a wide variety of animal illnesses.  But how do you find the right veterinarian?  Do all veterinarians treat all kinds of pets?  And if you have an exotic pet, who treats them?  (Wikipedia defines an exotic pet as “…a rare or unusual animal or pet, or an animal kept within human households which is generally thought of as a wild species not typically kept as a pet.”  What if you need to find a veterinarian specialist?

In order to find the right veterinarian for your specific type of pet you need to do some research, just as you would if you were trying to find a doctor for yourself.  You also need to know that depending where you live and what training your pet needs a veterinarian to have, you may find it necessary to travel a long distance to get the services needed.  For example, if you have a parrot you need an avian veterinarian that has had specialized training in treating birds.

Most people start their research by talking to family or friends who have the same type of pet as theirs to get referrals.  That is often just a start.  Check out the information at the American Veterinary Medical Association link below to help you complete your research.
